NFL Goes International with Multi-Language Tutorial

Football is one, if not the most popular sports on the planet, but the football played in the U.S. is actually a different game altogether. The NFL is making a valiant effort to increase American Football’s global appeal, and what better way to accomplish that feat than to translate an online tutorial into Spanish, French, and Chinese? With professional help the NFL is hoping that translators will be able to ‘tackle’ the task of expressing isolated colloquial terms. This process is even more difficult when there is no equivalent word in the target language, as this is the case with “touchdown” for instance. Japanese will be the next language to make it online, which will pose a problem for the many chess references used throughout the tutorial. The Japanese rarely play chess, so the similar game of shogi will be used to replace many of the inept references.
