Linguists state that Indonesia is facing a “youth crisis” in which the traditional Indonesian language is being threatened. For the last five years the youth in Indonesia have increased their use of a pidgin language known as Bahasa Gaul, which is an informal combination of Jakarta Malay and traditional Indonesian. The explanation offered by linguists points to the mass media’s excessive use of Bahasa Gaul in every facet of youth entertainment from television and radio broadcasts to the growing film industry.
