Translators, In the Army Now

The U.S. army has recently enacted its first foreign language unit, the 51st Translator Interpreter Company out of Fort Irwin, California. The soldiers enlisted in this company have been speaking a particular language their entire lives. The newly created unit has not yet been fully manned; the unit will eventually contain 140 native speakers of languages like Arabic, Farsi, Pashtu, Kurdish, and Dari. About 75 percent of the enlisted foreign language specialists are not American citizens, but are green card holders. All recruits into this specialized unit must pass rigorous security and background checks before being accepted into the program. The 51st Company is a part of the military's emphasis on foreign language skills, and an effort to give soldiers better cultural awareness and some rudimentary language capabilities. Read More
