The Film Industry Embraces ‘Hinglish’

The word Hinglish refers to the fusion of English and Hindi, which is becoming increasingly popular in two very different cultures. When considering the early British colonization of India, the combination comes as no surprise: both English and Hindi are the official languages of India. The language exchange between English and Hindi is not one sided: many words such as pajamas, caravan, cummerbund, and bungalow have become a part of common English vocabulary, all borrowed from India. Recent cinematic successes such as Bend it Like Beckham, Lions of Punjab, and the most recently acclaimed Slumdog Millionaire, are great examples of how well American audiences receive films with completely different cultures and values. The future of Hinglish in the film industry is growing, and as the world becomes more and more connected, we will continue to see assimilation that is long overdue.
