Alaska’s Tlingit Language Receives Large Grant

The National Science Foundation has recently shown great interest in the preservation of Alaskan native languages by recording, documenting, and ultimately translating spontaneous conversations between native Tlingit speakers. The NSF’s “Documenting Endangered Languages” initiative has awarded $450,000 to continue a five year long project that started out with an initial grant of $360,000. University of Alaska Southwest professors have created custom software that displays Tlingit sound waves of captured conversations along with their English translation. The grant will also be used for the purposes of cataloging UAS professors’ and prominent Tlingit history authors Nora and Richard Dauenhauer's collection of Tlingit audio tapes recorded over the course of 40 years.
