Korea to Join Worldwide Popularity Contest

Korea has recently taken a stand to increase its ranking of 33 out of 50 in the Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index, one of the most widely accepted measurements of a country's global image. The Presidential Council on National Branding has laid out a 10-point action plan that will address key areas of worldwide recognition. Korea is currently the 13th largest economy, but does not have a very high global image to show for its powerful financial system. The most influential areas of improvement include promoting the country’s most popular martial art Taekwondo, and increasing the funding for “Korean Supporters,” a Peace Corps-like program which dispatches over 3,000 volunteers across the world, second only to the 8,000 volunteers from the United States. Korea also aims to increase its brand name academically, by unifying the names of its language academies, a new “Global Korean Scholarship” to increase perceptions among foreign students and scholars.
