While the current global economic crisis may shine a less than stellar light on the American dollar, English as a global language appears to be reinforcing U.S. power for some time to come. It is estimated that by the year 2015, half of the earth’s population will be speaking English and well on its way to becoming the world’s unofficial language. For many people around the world, learning English is a path to gaining middle-class security and economic betterment. The numbers of English speakers across the world are staggering: 300 million in China, another 350 million in India, and another 750 million from around the world that have studied English as a second language, for a the total of well over a billion.
