The CIA Seeks to Increase Language Proficiency

It has been five years since the 9/11 Commission heavily criticized the CIA for inadequate language skills. A new initiative announced by CIA Director Leon Panetta, will seek to double the number of analysts fluent with languages deemed critical, such as Arabic, Farsi, and Urdu. A complete overhaul of language proficiency will help to improve the CIA’s fluency in a second language from a very low 13 percent to an impressive 50 percent across the board. Panetta’s plan calls for actively recruiting more language proficient agents, and retraining thousands of current employees at the agency’s own in-house CIA-University.
