Technology

Omni’s clients represent a diverse range of industries and their technology requirements are equally varied. Our solutions-based approach along with the knowledge of our clients’ translation needs, continuously drive us to adapt our skill set by developing processes and using new tools to not only save time and money, but to create ways in which we can ensure the integrity of the translated materials.

xFer

You have undoubtedly spent countless hours writing the text and creating the design of your printed materials. As a result, our focus isn’t just on accurately translated words. Giving consideration to how those words look and feel is just as important. In order to save time and money while maintaining the design integrity of your material, Omni has developed xFer, a process in which translation and layout are as automated and seamless as possible.

xFer – Omni’s Copy Transfer Process:

  1. Export copy from the native application (InDesign, Visio, Photoshop, etc.) to a text-based, encoded file.
  2. Translate and verify documents in corporate-friendly Microsoft Word, then send to client for review and approval.
  3. Integrate approved copy back into the native application, while maintaining the design integrity of the source document.

Omni’s xFer process significantly reduces the man-hours spent on each project. At the same time, it helps maintain design consistency between the original and localized materials, regardless of the language, desktop application, or platform used.

Programming and Markup Languages

XML, Java, HTML, JavaScript, ASP, ActionScript are just a few of the programming and markup languages that define the functioning and display of the data and text in applications, websites, and eLearning courses. They are critical to the delivery of your content. Our processes and translation tools deliver seamless and effective localization that protects your coding and ensures that your translated content successfully integrates into your CMS, LMS, or website.

Localizing XML

Because XML tags are created by the user and thus incorporate very few predefined tags, they allow the programmer a great deal of flexibility and customization. However, this custom approach to programming makes localizing XML content challenging and, if not done correctly, can result in foreign language content that doesn’t come close to meeting your expectations.

To properly prepare the files for localization, several steps must be taken. Most importantly, the coding must remain intact. If it is disrupted or altered in any way, it will undoubtedly lead to disaster — especially for an XML script that is hundreds of pages long. Searching for corrupt coding within an extensive document will result in substantial delays in delivery, and this can translate into unhappy clients.

Omni has spent a considerable amount of time developing a process for seamless and effective localization of XML content. Click here to see how Omni provides localization solutions to our XML-based Xyleme clients.

In addition to delivering expertly translated documents, our process ensures that your coding is protected and successfully integrates into your website, application, or content management system with no intervention on your part. We deliver fully functional, multilingual projects — all accurately translated, on time, and within budget.

Translation Memories and Computer Assisted Translation

Using Google Translate or similar online translators is great if all you are looking for is a quick translation for internal use. The reality of software and web-based translation is that, while it does have the ability to translate words, in most cases it does not have the ability to translate meaning. Translations suitable for your clients, consumers, or employees require a human touch. If you are required to present your information in a professional manner to your end user, you need to use professional foreign language writers and editors.

The use of translation tools is critical in today’s fast-paced, results-driven workplace. Using computers to help in the translation process is essential in saving time and money on your translation costs. If your company uses the same content across different formats or you have material that requires frequent updates, it’s wise to leverage existing translations to decrease overall costs and maintain consistency. So how do we manage all this data?

Translation Memory Is Key

Translation Memories (TM) and Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) software are the answer to maintaining consistency, keeping costs down, and achieving faster delivery times. Computers are ideal for the mundane task of keeping track of data and retrieving it instantly. But if you’ve ever used an online translation tool, it’s obvious the human element is paramount to translation quality and accuracy. Combine the efficiency of a computer with the human touch and the beauty of this technology becomes crystal clear. At the core of these tools is a database that contains language pairs of the source text and the matching translated text. These tools work silently in the background, scanning countless pairs of source phrases with existing translations to recall identical or similar phrases, thus reducing the work of the translator.

Translation Memory Advantages

  • Cost reduction
  • Consistency
  • No need to keep track of revisions
  • Faster delivery
