Types of Translated Subtitles
The two types of translated subtitles are either:
- Open captions (OC)
- Closed captions (CC)
Open captions are permanently visible to the viewer because they are ‘burnt into’ the video file. Closed captions (CC) are an overlay that can be turned on or off.
For your videos, if you want to enforce accessibility and more flexibility in your captions, opt for open captions. They can be placed anywhere (although it’s standard that they are at the bottom), and factors such as font style, font size, text color, background color and the number of lines of text can be chosen too.
Closed captions are better for videos where you think that your end-users will want subtitles and some people won’t. They offer less customization as you are working with the standards and settings of the video player/destination (such as YouTube).
Also, if you want multiple translated subtitle files, closed captions are the best option.

Human or AI Subtitle Translation
In our experience, whether you opt for human or AI subtitle translation services should depend on your specific project and needs.
If you have a smaller budget and need to scale videos, AI subtitle translation can be useful.
While it may not be faultless, AI can provide a good general understanding of your content and message.
Note that AI is better at some languages than others, usually the languages most spoken, as it has been trained on more data from those languages.
But we would say that the usage of AI for subtitle translation depends on the setting. When accuracy is paramount in industries such as legal and financial, human translation is a must. If it’s for a lifestyle YouTube video, for example, and the client wants to translate the video to English subtitles, AI may be better suited.
