A certified translation in the U.S. is a translated document that is accompanied by a signed statement called a Certificate of Translation Accuracy from the translator attesting that:
the translation is complete and accurate, and
the translator is competent to translate between the source language and English.
In U.S. practice, this certification is what makes a translation “certified,” there is no government licensing or federal credential required for translators. The certification statement should include the translator’s name, signature, date and contact information, and be attached to the translated document.
