End-to-End Multilingual DTP Production

Founded in 1978 and proudly based in Houston, Texas, Omni provides multilingual desktop publishing (DTP) through our in-house production studio.

DTP can form part of a fully managed translation project or be provided as a standalone service when you already have translated content and need specialist production support.

Keeping production in-house gives your project team direct access to the people responsible for preparing and formatting your files. For translation projects, our production team can work as part of the same managed workflow, alongside project management and specialist linguists.

Whether you need DTP alongside translation or simply need finished multilingual copy placed into your existing files, we can tailor the production workflow around your requirements.

Our translation workflows support formats including Word, PDF, PowerPoint, complex engineering drawings, and InDesign, with DTP and file preparation available when required.

xFer: Omni’s Copy Transfer Process

For design-heavy multilingual projects, Omni has developed xFer, our proprietary copy transfer process. xFer is designed to reduce the manual work involved in transferring translated copy between the source application and the translation and review process while preserving the design integrity of the original material.

The process works by exporting copy from the native application, such as InDesign, Visio, or Photoshop, into a text-based encoded file.

Your content can then be translated and verified in Microsoft Word and sent to you for review and approval. Once approved, the copy is integrated back into the native application.

xFer significantly reduces the man-hours spent on production and helps maintain design consistency between the original and localized materials.

FAQs

What is desktop publishing?

Desktop publishing, otherwise called DTP, is the process of using specialist software to create and format page layouts that combine elements such as text and images.

DTP is used to produce materials for print and digital use, including brochures, presentations, magazines, books, and other publications.

Why is DTP needed in translation?

When content is translated, the way the text fits and behaves within a document can change.

For example, translated text may expand or contract. Also, different languages and scripts can affect the original layout and create issues with line breaks, spacing, tables, graphics, and other elements.

Multilingual DTP addresses these formatting and layout issues after the translation is completed. The goal is for the final content to remain correctly presented in all language versions.
